Landmark Protections For Trans and Non-Binary Teens Passed in California

On July 15th, Governor Newsom signed an historic bill into law, protecting LGBTQ+ kids and teens from being forcibly outed to their guardians by school teachers.

Over the last few years, conservative school district boards, including some in California, have been proposing and passing hateful laws that require teachers to out students to their parents. These measures serve no purpose except to create a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ kids in the classroom.

Most boards have voted such hateful measures down. Unfortunately, this law was required to protect kids in districts that managed to pass such discriminatory laws.

The legal challenges are already flying, so this fight is far from over. But today, LGBTQ+ kids can celebrate a loud and proud milestone in the fight for their rights.

On January 8th 2024, LGBTQ Merced were proud to add our voices to a Patterson School Board meeting, where this kind of hateful proposal was voted DOWN.
